The living dead had taken more from us than land and loved ones. They'd robbed us of our confidence as the planet's dominant life form. We were a shaken, broken species, driven to the edge of extinction and grateful only for tomorrow with perhaps a little less suffering than today. Was this the legacy we would leave our children, a level of anxiety and self-doubt not seen since our simian ancestors cowered in the tallest trees? What kind of world would they rebuild? Would they rebuild at all? Could they continue to progress, knowing that they would be powerless to reclaim their future? And what if that future saw another rise of the living dead? Would our descendants rise to meet them in battle, or simply crumple in meek surrender and accept what they believe to be their inevitable extinction? For this alone, we had to reclaim our planet. We had to prove to ourselves that we could do it, and leave that proof as this war's greatest monument. The long, hard road back to humanity, or the regressive ennui of Earth's once-proud primates. That was the choice, and it had to be made now. . Max Brooks
About This Quote

The Living Dead are a type of zombie that are created by unnatural, scientific means that have been used to great effect in the past to prolong the lives of those who are suffering from terminal illnesses. They are created by taking people's DNA and combining it with the DNA of dead tissue samples to create a new type of life form that is half human, half zombie. The process can be reversed, but it is very dangerous. It kills the person being turned into a living dead as well as any other living dead within a 50-foot radius. It can also create more living dead if there aren't enough samples to do so. The Living Dead are controlled by the brain patterns of the human they are created from, making them obedient and subservient to their creators. The living dead are not fast enough to catch their prey, but instead hunt for people by hearing their heartbeat and following it.

They can also smell whether or not you're hiding something in your clothes or hair. Since they don't have much of a sense of smell, this isn't very effective. Attempts at fighting back against them tend to result in biting and clawing attacks.

The only way to truly defeat them is to either shoot them or burn them. For more information on how these zombies came about and how they work, check out the book called "The Last Survivors" by Derek Bickerton
